General Description : Gral. José de San Martín (25 February 1778 – 17 August 1850), was an Argentine general and the prime leader of the southern part of South America's successful struggle for independence from Spain. From the city of Mendoza began his plan for the final liberation of South America: after creating the Army of the Andes with the same crossed the Andes and liberated Chile, in the battles of Chacabuco and Maipu. Taking control of Chilean vessels, attacked the center of Spanish power in South America, the city of Lima, which declared its independence in 1821. He met with Simon Bolivar in Guayaquil and gave him his army and the goal of completing the liberation of Peru.
Along with Bolivar is considered the most important South American liberator of Spanish colonization.
One hundred and fifty years after his death, the Banco Central pays homage to the Liberator with the issuance of a 50 Centavos coin in circulation quality, and a 5 Pesos gold coin in "brilliant uncirculated" quality.
Some of the pieces coined as circulation are presented in cardboard boxes with a brief biography and characteristics of the issuance. The coins included in this type of case have reeded edge and those presented in loose have plain edge.
