General Description The design of this banknote illustrates the life of Julio Argentino Roca (July 17, 1843 - October 19, 1914), who was an army general who served as President of Argentina from 1880 to 1886 and again 1898 to 1904. During his mandate directed "La Conquista del Desierto" or "Campaña del Desierto" (Conquest of the Desert or Campaign of the Desert), a military campaign in the 1870s that established Argentine dominance over Patagonia, which was inhabited by indigenous peoples.
Front Description The main impression shows the portrait of Roca and the background reproduces a replica of a letter from Julio A. Roca to Miguel Cane, who was the ambassador in Austria (1883-1885). There is also an evocation of the Argentine progress lit by the sun of the future. The main motifs are printed in intaglio and the backgrounds in offset.
Back Description It shows the painting "La Conquista del Desierto" of the Uruguayan painter Juan M. Blanes which shows the General Roca and his staff reviewing the troops.
In addition, there is a biographical summary of Roca in small letters, some handwritten pages, the sword and a laurel branch remembering the governor and the man of arms. The backgrounds include the outline of a horse and a spear, the numerical value repeated in stages and geometric motifs. The main motifs are printed in intaglio and the backgrounds in offset.
