Traditionally, coins in Thailand have been issued to comemmorate Royal events such as Coronations and Investitures. Coins have also been cast to commemorate national events, religious occaisions, even the Sixth Asian Games. Coins have been created in gold, silver, nickel, and pewter. This Bicentennial coin follows the tradition of pewter medallions cast during the Reign of Rama IV.

Bangkok was founded on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River in 1782 by King Rama I, the founding ruler of the House of Chakri, and modern Thailand dates from this period. Rattanakosin is the Royal name of Bangkok, it's full name being Krug Deb Mahanakorn Amorn Rattanakosin ("Krung" means "Capital", "Deb" means "Divine", "Mahanakorn" means "Great City", "Amorn" means "Prosperous" and "Rattanakosin" means "The Jewel Abode of the God Indra".)

Pewter was chosen for this medallion because it has a unique beauty of it's own, ideal for this momentous occaision. Thailand is the world's second largest producer of tin. Traditionally, fine pewter is an alloy of 95% of this valuable metal mixed with antimony and copper. Thai craftmanship in the hand casting of fine pewter is now world renown.
Front Description : The medallion has been specially designed to evoke the spirit and history of Krung Rattanakosin, the Divine Capital City and Jewel Abode of the God Indra. The obverse shows two celestial angels officially representing the Bicentennial, together with the date and occaision in English script.
Back Description : The reverse symbolizes the pomp, splendour and pageantry of this Royal City. The area at the bottom is intended for names of specific centennial events or persons to be engraved there. Also engraved here is the serial number of the medallion.
