General Description : The Order of the Patriotic War (Russian: Орден Отечественной войны) is a Soviet military decoration that was awarded to all soldiers in the Soviet armed forces, security troops, and to partisans for heroic deeds during the German-Soviet War, known by the former-Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War.
Gilt-edged five-pointed red enamel star imposed on a crossed sabre and rifle with bayonet fixed, with graduated pointed silver rays between the arms; the face with a circular central red enamel medallion bearing a gilt hammer and sickle within a white enamel ring inscribed ‘ОТЕЧЕСТВЕННА ЯВОЙНА’ (Patriotic War), a five-pointed gilt star at the base; the reverse with screwback, with maker’s mark ‘МОНЕТНЬІЙ / ДВОР’ (for the Monetny Dvor (Leningrad Mint) in relief.
The Order was instituted on 20 May 1942 in two classes to be awarded for quite precisely defined heroic acts in the war with Germany. In 1985, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the end of the war, it was determined that surviving veterans should receive the order. This example, with raised maker’s mark, is from that issue.
