General Description Orange Free State 1899 1 Shilling postal note.

6th. of April 1899.

Commission - 1 Penny.

Issued at Heilbron.

Cashed at Steynsburg (Cape of Good Hope) on the 10th. of April 1899.

The Orange Free State's postal notes were allowed to be cashed in the Cape of Good Hope,Natal,& the South African Republic under the terms of the South African Postal Union Convention (1898-99).
Front Description The Orange Free State's Coat-of-Arms in top left panel.

Regulations in Afrikaans at top & bottom.
Back Description A Cape of Good Hope 1 Penny Red postage stamp cancelled with Steynsburg datestamp to tie the stamp to the note.

Applying stamps on the backs of non-Cape of Good Hope postal notes & postal orders signified the payment of the original commission upon payment.The same practice applied in Natal,the Orange Free State & the South African Republic when the note from one member state was cashed in another member state.
