| General Description : | rappist Abbey Mariastern-Gwiggen, Hohenweiler, Vorarlberg The Abbey at Mariastern-Gwiggen is perched on a mound in the foothills of the Pfaender Massif ten kilometers to the north of Bregenz. The glass painting depicted on the stamp portrays Saint Benedict of Nursia, the father of all monks, according to whose example Benedictines and Trappists live. The former castle of Gwiggen with a Loretto chapel dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Numerous additions became necessary as the monastic order grew. The Trappists of Mariastern emphasize meditative orientation in their lifestyle. The nuns here invite the public to direct apostate to gathering and prayer, soul-searching and spiritual exercises, meditation and religious dialogue. An old tradition was revived in 1962 with the resumption of pilgrimages to the convent church. |
