34¢ Parliament building 1985

34¢ Parliament building 1985
Added by Alain Martineau
General Description : Engraved by Robert Couture Series year: 1985-1989
The Parliament Buildings of Canada are featured on new definitive postage stamps designed by Montreal graphic artist Rolf Harder. The 34¢ definitive illustrates a rear view of the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings. The Parliamentary Library appears in the foreground. Opened in 1876, the library was the only building spared when fire destroyed the Centre Block in 1916. An iron door separated it from the flames sweeping the remainder of the building. Reconstruction of the Centre block was completed in 1927 with the inauguration of the Peace Tower. New definitive postage stamps will be issued in coil and in vending machine booklet formats. A dark red, one-colour, steel-engraved version of the 34¢ Centre Block stamp will be used for the coil. A dark blue, steel-engraved version of this stamp will appear in the 50¢ vending booklet. The booklet also includes two 5¢ stamps featuring the East Block in dark brown, one-colour, steel engraving, and three 2¢ stamps showing the West Block in dark green, one-colour, steel-engraving. Each of the ten booklet covers illustrates a different architectural detail of the Centre Block.
