General Description : Serie: 314, Type: P, Stamps in serie: 1
After the cruel barbaric powers swept over and almost destroyed the roots of the western civilisation in the wake of the Second World War, together with the idea of the natural right as the fundamental issue of universal human values and rights, the project of the powers of the antifascist coalition to organize peace through the institution of the Unated Nations has made it possible, for the first time in history, to conceive a framework for the international and universal acceptance of the human rights concept. Based on the inherited principles of the French Declaration of the Rights of Man from the year 1789 and the principles of the American Constitution from the year 1787, as well as on the solutions incorporated into the constitutions of the majority of the countries of western democracies, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948, proclaiming that day the Human Rights Day. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights found its place within the framework of philately very soon after it was adopted. Starting with the year 1952, the OUN Post managment has been regularly issuing commemorative postage stamps on December 10, dedicated to the Human Rights Day. In the course of the past years, in agreement with the international implementation of the Declaration and the adoption of new documents of the General Assembly, the OUN postage stamps have been decorated with other motifs that promote different areas of the protection of human rights. Due to this practice adopted by many member countries, a rather large amount of material has been collected, arousing interest among the stamp collectors and introducing a new and very popular area of thematic philately. The postage stamp issued by the Croatian Post and Telecommunications, which is now being presented, has been conceived not only to merely commemorate the event, but first and foremost as a contribution to the promotion of the noble idea of human rights in our country, as well as a contribution to this specific hobby area.
