General Description Designed by Dr. Timothy Hsia and celebrating the theme Our Wonders, the two dollar coin depicts the northern lights in colour.
The northern lights are a true Canadian wonder, one that all Canadians from sea to sea can appreciate and call their own. To me, this radiant light display embodies Canada’s unity and beauty, Hsia said.
He titled his design Dance of the Spirits after how the Cree people attribute the northern lights to the special moment when the spirits manifest themselves, dancing, to the human eyes and minds below.
Obv. Description Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II no crown facing right over the 150th anniversary logo
Rev. Description The reverse shows a pair of paddlers dwarfed by a night sky that is alive with the ever-shifting movement of the Aurora Borealis. The paddlers pause and gaze awestruck in wonder of the mesmerizing scene unfolding above them.
A virtual image of two maple leaves will appear at the top of the coin – a different image is produced as the coin is turned from side to side. The virtual image is produced by engraving different patterns on each side of two-sided grooves on the face of the coin.
Two (2) laser marks of maple leaves, each within a circle, at the bottom of the coin.
