Vlaho Bukovac is undoubtedly one of the founders of Croatian modern painting. He is, at the same time, one of the most popular Croatian painters generally, whose works, like the "Croatian Revival", painted for the curtain of the Croatina National Theatre in Zagreb, as well as "Gundulić’s Dream", have become an integral part of the collective national memory. The qualities that used to enrapture Bukovac’s contemporaries in his works, primarily in his portraits, those strange mixtures of the traditional academic manner and impressionism, have a completely different effect upon the present - day public: they seem too conventional and decorative in their expression. His "Pink Dream" is a female nude painted in pointilist manner, with a delicate colour scale and vibrating surfaces in which the subtle nuances of the girl’s complexion get drowned in the somewhat heavy chocolate - red draperies, thus creating an exceptionally refined atmosphere of sophisticated and subdued eroticism.
